Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

HRA will be providing FREE Income Tax Preparation assistance at the library January 21 – April 15, 2023

“Increasing the number of families claiming the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). Serving Bristol, Farmington, Meriden, New Britain, Plymouth, Southington, Wallingford, and Vernon”

Program Offers:

  • Preparation and filing of annual tax returns by IRS-certified volunteers. All volunteers must be certified in Standards of Conduct (Ethics) and Current Tax Law along with other IRS required training. Training is updated annually.
  • Free of charge service to families and individuals whose total household income is $60,000 or less.

Drop-Off Appointments:

Schedule an appointment to drop off your tax return documents at the Meriden Public Library. An appointment is necessary in order to drop off your documents. You may wait in a vehicle until your return is complete, or schedule a time to return to pick up your documents. In-Person appointments are available at other VITA locations, but NOT at the Meriden Public Library.

Bring to your appointment:

  • Photo identification or Valid driver’s license
  • Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer ID Number(s) for all household members
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and your dependents
  • Wage and earning statement(s) forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from all banks (Form 1099)
  • Forms 1095 A, B or C, Affordable Care Act Statements
  • Copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available
  • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit (blank check or a letter from your bank)
  • Other relevant information:
    • Receipts from child care providers, with provider’s identifying number
    • Education expenses and student loan information
    • List of all business income and expenses, if applicable
  • Married taxpayers filing a joint return: both spouses must be present to sign required forms

COVID-19 Update:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the following requirements will be in place for all office visits and in-person appointments:

  • All individuals are strongly recommended to wear a face mask, or other cloth face covering.
  • Only the primary applicant will be allowed entry into our facilities. Please do not bring multiple family members.
  • Social distancing of six feet or more is strongly recommended at all locations and you may be asked to wait in your vehicle prior to entering our facilities.
