The five Smith sisters of Glastonbury CT were ahead of their time. Born in the last two decades of the 18th century, during a period when the young United States was struggling to define the term democracy, they spent their entire lives challenging narrow definitions that excluded women, African-Americans, and immigrants from full citizenship. Abolitionist, suffragists, and Bible translators, the Smith sisters set an ethical example that still inspires.
