In the 1950s, a privileged white girl in conservative, segregated Virginia was expected to adopt a willful blindness to the inequities of race and the constraints of gender. Drew Gilpin rebelled. This book, culminating in the upheavals of 1968, captures the transformation of a country and an engaged young woman.
